IE8 and Reliability
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/07/28/ie8-and-reliability.aspx

If all were well with your computer, you should see two (2) instances of IEXPLORE.EXE in Task Manager's Processes tab for every open IE8 window.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions in a numbered list in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):
1. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed?  What third-party firewall (if any)?
2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on this computer?
3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)
4. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the Name option in the Sort by box on the right. Now scroll down & tell me if ALL of the following updates are listed?
    • KB2586448, KB2567053, KB2570947, KB2616676, KB2567680, KB2544521, KB2393802 & KB971029
Most will be displayed as Security Update for Windows XP followed by the KB number in parentheses.
If IE8 is installed, two will be displayed as Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 8 followed by the KB number in parentheses.
As of this morning, there ARE only 2 instances of iexplore in my processes list, after opening this tab open there are now 3.  But that wasn't the case yesterday so here ar e the answers to your questions:
1, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012 – doesn't have an expiration date listed. Also have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Ad-Aware Free installed. No 3 party firewall installed.
2. Never installed Norton or McAfee
3. I do not remember there was ever being a trial antivirus program installed… computer was built to spec and I had requested no trial software.
4. YES – ALL of these updates are listed
Again, please answer all of the following diagnostic question in your next reply:
1. What, if any, anti-virus application was installed BEFORE you first installed AVG Free (any version), was your subscription still current and did you uninstall it & reboot before you first installed AVG Free?
2. Is Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch enabled and if so, do you fully understand what Ad-Watch does & how it does it?
3a. Are all AVG LinkScanner components (i.e., Search Shield, Surf-Shield & Online Shield) enabled?
3b. Is AVG's Identity Protection enabled?
4. Does the behavior persist if you've started IE in No Add-ons mode?
   => Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No add-ons)
Note: Manually disabling all Add-ons is NOT the same as starting IE in No Add-ons mode.
5. Does the behavior persist after you open IE (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737, run the Fix It and then reboot?
6. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?
7. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; Advanced SystemCare; AVG PC TuneUp; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; CCleaner)?
8. Is Update for Windows XP (KB2641690) listed in Add/Remove Programs now?
Its suggestive that you download a software named as malwarebytes and you can also install microsoft security essentials for your computer for protection in case you do not want to spend and get a paid protection for the computer..Also do run a quick scan of malwarebytes  after you download it in safe mode with networking as the computer is freezing up..after you have done that remove the infections and also remove from teh quarantine tab and then do a clean boot on system configuratin utility by tying in msconfig on the run box (Window + R)..and then disable all services after checking hide all microsoft services and also disabled all startup items..Just make sure to keep the wireless services started..Try this and see..
<pft> Suggestive or suggested, neither Microsoft Security Essentials nor any other anti-virus application can be installed to clean up an already-infected computer!  See http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/87058857-d181-4019-a723-efd9a49d9275
